For the inventor of the Web, everyone will soon have their personal ChatGPT.
The creator of the World Wide Web expects generative artificial intelligences to multiply in the future. According to him, each Internet user will even have his own intelligent assistant, similar to ChatGPT, at his disposal.
Tim Berners-Lee, the man considered to be the founding father of the Web, spoke of the rise of generative artificial intelligences, such as the now essential ChatGPT.
He believes that every internet user will have access to their own smart personal assistant in the future. Concretely, any user will be able to deploy his artificial intelligence, based on his own database, on a server managed by him. Tim Berners-Lee adds that Internet users will be able to rely on the technology developed by his start-up , Interrupt. The firm is developing a system allowing Internet users to store their personal data on Personal Online Data Stores (PDS) or pods. These pods, accessible online, contain all the private information of an individual.
“You have a whole spectrum of data – all the data with your collaborations and your coffees, your projects and your dreams. And the books that you read and... your whole life, so it's in your pod. You run the AI based on that. It could be nice,” says Tim Berners-Lee.
Once deployed on all of an individual's personal data, the chatbot will be able to assist the user and answer their questions, in the same way as the ChatGPT included in the Opera browser(Connect better with your favorite messengers in-browserDownload now!) does research on the web.
Better control of personal data

Thanks to the Inrupt pod system, Tim Berners-Lee also seeks to protect the privacy of Internet users. Rather than entrusting their data to third parties, users will be able to choose to manage all of their private information.
The pods make it easier to interact with the various services on the Web, explains the Inrupt site. It will be possible to grant a website or service access to a silo of data, rather than accepting the default collection imposed by the digital giants. In addition, the system developed by the start-up offers the data holder to set limits for each use, such as a maximum duration. We find the same logic behind the iOS anti-ad tracking system.
Inrupt is built on Solid (Social Linked Data), an open source privacy platform. This decentralized network is designed to host all pods. Note that the technology of Interrupt is still in its infancy. Initially, the solution is intended for businesses.
The Inrupt proposal would make it possible to return to the initial values carried by the Web. According to the British computer scientist, the Web has gradually centralized around major players, such as social networks. From now on, the power, formerly in the hands of each Internet user, is concentrated by the digital giants.
"When people look at you on Facebook, you don't really control what they see... Mark Zuckerberg's algorithms control the news that is transmitted to them", regrets Tim Berners-Lee.
This is not the first time that Tim Berners-Lee has made a bitter observation of the World Wide Web. Disappointed by the evolution of his creation, he launched several initiatives to fight against the excesses of the Web. In 2019, the Londoner notably announced a “global action plan” with the ambition of “building a better online world”… with the support of most of the technology giants.
